Day 1: The Heart of Mughal Agra

You start your tour on arrival in Agra during the morning by train or vehicle. Upon arrival at the hotel and after a short rest, the tour starts with a visit to the mythological Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan, the emperor, ordered it as a memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a timeless monument of love. Shining white marble structure, ornate carvings, and serene gardens make this monument a place that you just cannot miss. Serene early morning hours enhance the beauty of the Taj, and hence photographer's paradise and a place for a serene experience.

You can proceed to this marvelous tour, from where you can go to a nearby restaurant to have an old-fashioned Mughlai lunch. Spicy, rich food is what Agra is famous for, and so it is time to taste the local food like butter chicken, kebabs, and naan. For lunch, and then the day's next outing is the breathtaking Agra Fort. One of the World Heritage Sites designated by UNESCO, the red sandstone fort complex was the favorite palace of Mughal emperors. As you walk through the glittering halls and palaces such as the Diwan-i-Khas and Sheesh Mahal of the fort, you will value even more the might and majesty of the Mughal Empire. You can see in the distance what Shah Jahan saw from prison, the Taj Mahal.

In the evening, you may then proceed to Mehtab Bagh, which is a lovely garden complex located across the Yamuna River facing the Taj Mahal. It is a great place to see the monument with a great sunset view, perfect for photography buffs. The peaceful ambiance and well-manicured gardens make it a perfect location to unwind after walking around during the day.

The day is followed by an evening excursion to the dynamic local market of Agra. Sadar Bazaar and Kinari Bazaar are where one finds an assortment of souvenirs from leather accessories to marble sculpture, miniature replicas of the Taj Mahal, ethnic wear, and local sweets such as petha. It is the best time to experience the city's dynamic culture and shop for special souvenirs. In the night, subsequently, you can eat at a rooftop restaurant facing the Taj Mahal or get back to your hotel for a sound sleep. 

Day 2: Fatehpur Sikri Day Tour and Cultural Excursions

Breakfast in the morning at the hotel in preparation for a half-day excursion to the ancient city of Fatehpur Sikri. Located approximately 40 kilometers from Agra, this former capital of the Mughal Empire was built by Emperor Akbar and was left incomplete due to a paucity of water. The city is an architectural paradise of Indo-Islamic architecture, with its crown jewels being the humongous Buland Darwaza, the stunningly built Jama Masjid, the exquisite Panch Mahal, and the white marble tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti. Four buildings collectively constitute a masterwork and a dream of the perfect city from the emperor's viewpoint.

A second visit can then be made later to Agra for lunch at a heritage restaurant. Another chance to dine in true North Indian style, in the ambiance of a dining experience, Mughal-style. In the afternoon, the second site is Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, often referred to as the "Baby Taj." Nur Jahan had it built in memory of her father, and this tomb is famous for its beautiful inlay work and is the precursor to the Taj Mahal. Its tranquil ambiance and spectacular look make it a hidden jewel among Agra's monuments.

To complete the cultural experience, do not forget to go and see a marble inlay workshop where craftsmen unveil the painstaking process of making adorned objects from marble, of valuable material. It is not only an excellent method of promoting domestic industry, but also to appreciate the artwork as reflected in such structures as the Taj Mahal.
