Jaisalmer Fort

The majestic Golden Fort, Jaisalmer Fort, or Sonar Quila, Jaisalmer Fort is nestled in the laps of the Thar Desert. It’s not just a fort but a small settlement of houses, temples, shops, and restaurants. The magnificent fort was built in 1156 by Bhati Rajput ruler, Rao Jaisal. Jaisalmer Fort is the only living fort in the world that has almost 2/3rd the population of the old city.

Patwon ki Haveli

The first haveli and mansion in Jaisalmer, Patwon ki Haveli has rightfully emerged as an important tourist attraction. The haveli is a cluster of five mansions built by the wealthy business family of the Patwas. One haveli each was made for every son and the haveli was completed over a span of sixty years in the 19th century.

Vyas Chhatri

A beautiful assemblage of chhatris made of golden sandstone built in the typical style of Rajasthani architecture. Vyas Chhatri was built in the honor of sage Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata. Vyas Chhatri is located on the northwestern edge of Jaisalmer town. It is located within a Brahmin cemetery where the burial grounds of kings lie. The impressive carvings and the raised dome-shaped platforms are a real sight for sore eyes.

Nathmalji ki Haveli

A beautiful ornate architecture of Nathmal ji ki Haveli is located in the heart of the beautiful city of Jaisalmer. The heritage haveli was built as the residence of the former prime minister of the kingdom Diwan Mohata Nathmal. The exquisite exteriors are adorned with stunning carvings and virtuoso work where two elephants made of limestone guard the entryway to the haveli.

Kuldhara Village

The abandoned village of Kuldhara is located about 20 kilometers from Jaisalmer. The village is widely famous for its legends and myths and is believed to be haunted. The abandoned village sits solitary amidst the barren stretch of the Thar Desert. The haunted site is prohibited to see after sunset and before sunrise because of the paranormal activities that take place there. Many ghostly stories and supernatural activities in and around the village make it an interesting and haunted site in Rajasthan.

Jaisalmer Sand Dunes

Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer in Winters (November to March): During the winter months of November through March, Jaisalmer experiences nice days and cooler nights with temperatures often ranging from 12 to 28 degrees.

Monsoon Season (September to October): Jaisalmer often has 26–36 degree temperatures during the monsoon season, which is marked by light rain and drizzle. The days are hot and muggy, but the evenings are comfortable.

Summer Season in Jaisalmer (April to August): April through August are not the best times of year to visit Jaisalmer because they are thought to be the warmest months of the year. The afternoons are typically rather hot for touring, with highs of 30 to 40 degrees.
 

How to reach Jaisalmer

By Air

There isn't yet a commercial airport in Jaisalmer.  It does have a military airport, although tourists rarely utilize it for anything other than chartered flights.  The best option to fly into Jaisalmer is to fly via Jodhpur Airport, which is the closest domestic airport.

By Road

Some travelers prefer to travel by car from other cities, like Delhi, Jaipur, and Udaipur, to Jaisalmer. This can be done with a rental automobile, your own car, or a self-drive rental.

By Bus

Although there aren't any buses that go directly from Delhi to Jaisalmer, you can get to Jaipur and change buses there. Another option is to go to Jodhpur and then take a bus to Jaisalmer. Buses from Udaipur and Bikaner are also available for travel to Jaisalmer.

By Train

Since Jaisalmer is connected to a number of cities, taking the train is a smart way to get there.  Travelers from most parts of India have a variety of options.  Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Delhi trains.
